Yakima Valley is one of the world's largest producers of agricultural crops. More than 40 commercial crops are grown in the Yakima Valley and Yakima Valley cherries are one of the first crops of the season and are famous world-wide.

Washington Fruit Place At Barrett Orchards celebrates cherry harvest with a Cherry Festival, July 2rd-4th. This fun family-friendly festival in a beautiful country setting provides fun experiences like U-pick cherries, wagon rides, pie eating contests, prizes and more. Enjoy the outdoor interpretive cherry trail with information about the varieties and history of the Bing and Rainer cherries. The 11 stations including the pollination of a cherry tree, information about the varieties, harvesting and irrigation. The warehouse is open with delicious Bing, Chelan, Tieton and Rainier sweet cherries available for purchase. Tart pie cherries should be ready by late July. There will not be U-PICK cherries this season.

Summer Swimming : New Aquatic Center, Pools, Water Playground

Looking to cool off in the Yakima Valley with the family. How about the new aquatic center in Prosser, water playground in Yakima?

NEW AQUATIC CENTER in Prosser consists of two pools: One with a standard competition length of 25-yards with 8 lanes for competitions, a dramatic new 27-foot long drop slide, plunging into 9-feet of water, removable float lines for open swim times, and water basketball and volleyball equipment. The second pool is designed specifically for recreational use. This pool will include a zero-depth “beach” entry where the concrete deck slopes gradually down into the water, making movement in and out of the water easy for all ages. Other amenities include a full size interactive play structure within the pool, a 100-foot long water slide and other play features. We have added the water. Now...bring on the fun!!!

Franklin Pool, in Franklin Park, features a 112 foot water slide. There is also a snack shack which offers an inexpensive lunch combo package. Yakima Valley Museum is nearby with a 1930s Style Soda Fountain, a great place for ice cream after your swim . The hours of Franklin Pool recreation swim are Monday through Friday from 12:30-4:30p.m., 7:15-9pm. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 5-7p.m. The fee for youths are $2.00 and adults $3.75.
Lions Pool is an enclosed pool at 509 West Pine Street. Recreational swim sessions are Monday through Friday 1:30-3:30 and 3:15-4:45p.m. Special Funky Friday Night Swim from 7pm to 8:30 for special rate of .50 for youth and $1.00 for adult, enjoy the 80's music.
Water Play Grounds in the city of Yakima are free at Miller Park, North 4th Street and "E" Street; Martin Luther King Park, South 8th Street and Beech.
Yakima YMCA Indoor Heated Pool features recreational swims open to children of all ages and their families to come and enjoy the swimming fun. Parents do not have to accompany their children, but are encouraged to swim and play together at the pool. The evening and weekend sessions also include the use of a slide.

Selah Pool at Wixson Park is open 1 to 4 p.m. and 5:45 to 8:45 p.m, seven days a week. Admission is $2.00 for children 17 and under, $3.00 for adults and $8.00 for families.

The pool in the city of Naches on Hwy. 12 at Applewood Park offers open June 10-August 26; swim hours daily from 1-3 p.m., 3:30-5:30 p.m., plus 6:15-8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission: $1.50 for district residents, $2.00 for non district. While in Naches stop in at Thompson Farm Market for a smoothie!

The City of Toppenish, well known for its 70 western themed murals and Yakama Nation features opportunities for sightseeing and swimming. The public pool on Asotin Avenue is open June10-August 26 from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the week, with various swimming activities. Saturday and Sunday the pool is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children under 12.

Sunnyside pool open June 11 - September 5; swim hours are daily ,1:00 to 3:00 p.m., 3:15-5:15p.m. Family swim hours daily, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Admission is $2 .00 for children 4-7, $3.00 for 8 and older. Sunnyside Darigold Dairy Fair off exit 68 of I-82 East is a great place to stop before or after your swim for a deli sandwich and Ice cream on a hot day.

Grandview Municipal pool is open Monday - Saturday June 17-August 11.

Union Gap, WA: Settled by Wagon Train in 1865

The City of Union Gap was originally settled by wagon train led by Dr. L. H. Goodwin* in 1865. The wagon train was on its way to the Puget Sound when the Goodwin's decided to settle by the Yakima River, near the gap between two hills . This settlement became "Yakima City" in 1869, becoming the first municipality in Yakima County. Yakima City was granted it's Territorial Charter rights in 1883. In 1884 Northern Pacific Railway Company* came to the valley looking for a place to locate it's station. Deciding on land 4 miles north of Yakima City, they moved over 100 buildings including stores and residents homes. That new city became North Yakima, then Yakima, and the original Yakima City changed its name to Union Gap.

Dr. Lewis H. Goodwin's wife died soon after arriving in 1865 and was buried on a cliff by the Yakima River. Dr. Goodwin donated the land to the city which is now known as the *Pioneer Graveyard. Mrs. Goodwin was the first white woman to be buried in Yakima county. Located at the east end of the Ahtanum Road in Union Gap, this cemetery houses the grave-sites of many of the Yakima Valley original settlers.

The settlers of the Yakima Valley came here because of the rich land for agriculture. The Central Washington Agriculture Museum houses the antique hand tools, horse drawn and early mechanical farm machinery, a working sawmill, apple packing line, and the Lindeman tractor, which was invented in the Yakima Valley and sold to John Deere. The museum covers over 17 acres with displays and farm equipment in 29 covered building. The museum holds special events throughout the year. Open to walk through daily from dawn to dusk all year. Building Hours: Tuesday- Saturday 9am-5pm Sunday 1pm-4pm April - October 31.

Union Gap will be celebrating its status as being the first municipality in Yakima County during Old Town Days June 18th and 19th, 2011, This community celebration will include and idol competition, live music, food and craft vendors and children activities. Located in the beautiful 74 acre Ahtanum Park that was once a Department of Agriculture farm labor camp.

Today Union Gap is the center of shopping in the Yakima Valley with over 55 specialty stores in the Valley Mall. There are accommodations within walking distance of the mall, the Best Western Ahtanum Inn, Super 8 and the Quality Inn. There are many restaurants to choose from within walking distance of the Valley Mall and hotels. Old Town Station specializes in home-style cooking, the famous Miners burgers has been in the valley for over 40 years, IHOP, Old Country Buffet , Outback SteakHouse and more.

Family Fun on the Farm in the Yakima Valley

The abundant agricultural region of the Yakima Valley consists of many communities dotted with family farms. This close knit agricultural based community offers a number of unique opportunities to teach children about farm fresh fruit and produce, experience picking fresh fruit off the trees, celebrate the harvest and learn about farm animals.

There are farm fresh harvest and farm animal related events during the summer:
Thompson's Farm is a family owned farm open for u-pick fruit during the season. walk through the orchards and pick you own farm fresh fruit off the trees. It doesn't get any better than this.
Bill's Berry Farm in Grandview, WA features a number of free activities which are always available such as children's play area, country tire swing, and a petting zoo. On festival days there is a barnyard train, Pumpkin Chunkin (fall), and squeeze your own cider activities (fall). These festivals are; The Cherry Festival June 25, Blueberry Daze Festival July 2, Antiques on the Farm July 1-2, Apple and Pumpkin Festival and corn Maze Saturdays September 17-October 22.
Washington Fruit Place and Gift Shop in Yakima, WA, cherries will be ready to pick: June 28 - July 10. Selah Ridge Lavender Farm in Selah, WA - Join them in the Lavender Harvest Days the second weekend in July as you and your children gather your own u-cut lavender, listen to live music and check out the artisan craft vendors, and lavender products.
Bella Terra Gardens in Zillah WA. Bring the kids to see the goats, Babydoll sheep and chickens. Pick strawberries, black berries, raspberries and blueberries in season. Visit the Heritage barn filled with the wares of local craftspeople and artists. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the fresh country air and fun on the farm.

While you are in the valley, visit the Central Washington Agriculture Museum, the largest in the state, where you can discover how early settlers lived and worked the land to produce their food and grow their crops for an living.

A Great Trail for Mountain Bikers

One of Central Washington’s great trail experience for mountain bikers is the high desert Uplands area of the Cowiche Canyon Conservancy. Think 360 degree view of the valley and surrounding hills, a short drive from downtown Yakima. Ride the trail through sage brush, grasses and wildflower covered hills.

Directions From Downtown Yakima: West on Summitview to 40th Ave. Turn right on 40^th Ave. to the 2nd light. Turn left on Englewood travel about 3 miles to 80th Ave. Turn right on 80th go about 1/4 mile to West Scenic Drive turn left about 1/2 mile to Scenic Drive parking area.

You're Invited to "Come Watch the Paint Dry" on Toppenish's Newest Mural!

Who could resist and invitation like that?! The Toppenish Mural Society's Mural in a Day is a two day event, June 3th and 4th, 2011, featuring the painting of a western themed mural. Each year one artists work is chosen for the mural and a dozen other artists come help paint the mural in one day.

While in Toppenish, enjoy live music, steak feed 5pm Friday, Craft Vendors, Mural in a Day, horse drawn tours of over 70 Murals and more.

Past mural artists prints and paintings can be viewed at the Toppenish Visitor Center, just look for the tallest flag pole in Washington State. In the picture above, the mural is being painted on the Toppenish Visitor Center.

To pick up the 2011 Yakima Valley Visitor Guide new comprehensive map to all the murals in Toppenish, stop at the Yakima Valley Visitor Information Center off exit 33a I-82E.

While in Toppenish Take time to visit the Yakima Valley Rail & Steam Museum, in the restored Toppenish train depot. The American Hop Museum, the only one in America, is the place to learn about the Yakima Valley Hop production and history. The Yakima Valley produces over 75% of the hops sold in the world.

Selah, WA - An Ideal Location, A Country Community.

In the Yakima Valley, Selah, WA is located north of the city of Yakima at the beginning of the Yakima Valley, Washington's Wine Country. Zillah, WA - 100 Years in the Yakima Valley

The Yakima Valley consists of a number of towns, from the larger cities of Yakima and Prosser to the smaller towns of Union Gap, Toppenish, Zillah, Selah, Wapato, Sunnyside, Granger, Grandview and Benton City. Each of these cities and country towns is unique.

Zillah, WA would still be arid desert land and not the thriving agricultural community it is today without the Sunnyside Irrigation Project. This project, started by Walter Granger in the 1890's, allowed water to be taken from the Yakima River and distributed to the land using canals, which are still in use today. Walter Granger and Thomas Oakes of the Northern Pacific Railroad chose the town site, which was named after Oakes daughter, Zillah. The town site was selected in 1892 and the town was incorporated in 1911. Historical information will be on display in the Zillah Civic Center during Community Days. A site of historical interest to visit is the Zillah Teapot Gas Station built in 1922.

Today the city of Zillah is in the heart of Washington Wine Country the the Yakima Valley. Growing vast acres in vineyards in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.The wineries are surrounded by vineyards and orchards and range from small boutique to larger estate wineries, each with owners tending the tasting bars. The views of Mt. Adams across the valley floor are spectacular. This is the place where one can relax with a true wine country experience.

Zillah Events:

Traditional country, small town celebrations, reminiscent of a simpler era

Zillah, celebrates its Community Days during mid-May. In an area known for its orchards, vineyards and the Rattlesnake Hills AVA wineries, you can expect a parade, talent show, fireworks display, sack races, face painting, egg toss, horseshoe toss, and more.

Zillah's Harvest Celebration, Not Just a Farmers Market, occurs annually the Saturday after Labor Day in downtown Zillah. Forty to sixty vendors sell local produce, wood furniture, arts and crafts, food, and many unique items. There is live entertainment all day long which varies from bands to dance groups.

Nationally Recognized Botanical Cactus Garden

The Hillside Desert Cactus Garden is in bloom this weekend (5.14) for the beginning of a colorful display of Pacific Northwest winter hardy cacti. The Yakima Valley is nestled in the surrounding hills of the high desert area of Central Washington State. The rain shadow of the Cascade Mountain Range protects the Yakima Valley, which receives 300 days of sunshine and 6-9 inches of rain. The perfect climate for species of native cacti.

The most extensive collection of cacti can be seen at the Hillside Desert Botanical Cactus Garden. Gardener Ron Mckitrick started this cacti garden as a backyard hobby 28 years ago and now this garden is nationally recognized as one of the finest examples of a desert garden. The Cactus bloom tour begins mid-April and lasts until July, with the most profuse blooms from mid-May to June. Each year Ron hosts bus tours of Master Gardeners, school children, senior citizen groups, photographers and cactus lovers. These one hour tours are available from 8 a.m. to dusk during peak blooming time and are free, but donations are appreciated. Many species of potted and winter hardy cacti are available for purchase.

Tieton Cider Works is located in the small artist community of Tieton, WA made famous by the establishment of Mighty Tieton. Currently this boutique farm produces five ciders, which are available for tasting at events all over the state such as Taste Washington, Washington Brewers Festival, Mighty Tieton Events and Yakima Fresh Hop Ale Festival.

Blossom Nectar Cider, the sweetest cider with hints of melon and vanilla with a long finish.
Cherry Cider, definitely an apple cider, with a taste of cherry and like clove and cinnamon spices and a medium finish.
Harmony Reserve Cider with hints of lemon and hazelnut with pomegranate at the beginning of the long finish.
Tieton Blend Cider is the driest cider with clean citrus and crisp apple notes, with a nice long finish.
Wild Washington Apple Cider hints of pineapple, caramel and slight oak or wood flavor with a medium finish.

The Cowiche Canyon Trail originally was an old railroad spur which features 9 railroad trestle bridges. The entire Cowiche Canyon trail is a easy 2.9 family walk on a gravel trail along the Cowiche Creek with side trails bringing the total to 14 miles of trails in two locations with four trailheads.

The main trail is obvious, but there are also some side trails. After Bridge 8, there is a signed junction for the Uplands Trail taking you up to 360 degree views of Yakima and on a clear day, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams. Blooming spring flowers make this a great hike with over 200 species of red, yellow and purple native plants, wildflowers and interesting rock formations.

At this time a dozen independently owned artisan businesses have started or expanded under the Mighty Tieton banner. Tieton Cider Works is one of the craft businesses operating in the area. Celebrating Beer and Hops in the Yakima Valley!

In Washington State, hops are grown commercially only in the Yakima Valley, which supplies over 75% of the hops in the USA. There are three distinct growing areas; the Moxee Valley, the Yakama Nation Reservation, and the Prosser area.
Located east of the city of Yakima, Moxee farmers grow numerous acres of hops called hop yards, which can be seen while driving along Highway 24 toward Moxee. The Yakima Valley celebrates hops with, "The Moxee Hop Festival" in early August every year. This year, featuring live music, entertainment and a 5K run during the day. Friday and Saturday evenings feature Live music in the Beer Garden from 9-12 , celebrating the product that hops are used for.
In late August, "A Case of the Blues & All That Jazz" features Jazz music, local food vendors, a silent auction, Yakima Valley wineries and Pacific Northwest micro brews all under tents in the beautiful Sarg Hubbard Park. Bring a lawn chair or purchase a VIP table. Travelers to Yakima for this event enjoy the option of two hotels within walking distance, which are the Oxford Inn and the Oxford Suites. Book early as this event always sells out.

The Annual Fresh Hop Ale Fest showcases many micro-brews and a competition for beers produced with fresh hops from the Yakima Valley. Every year the event is in front of the historic Capital Theater starting at 6pm. Fresh hop cones grown and harvested in the Yakima Valley, instead of dried and/or pelleted hops, are used by competing brewers to capture the herbal, grassy characteristic only available in a freshly-picked hop. The fresh hop ale’s requirement that Yakima Valley hops must travel from the vine to the brewing vat in less than 24 hours. Sample from the 16 Craft Breweries competing for the Commercial Brewers Fresh Hop Ale Awards, decide which you like best, dance to live music, purchase some dinner (great bratwurst at this event!) and enjoy the revitalized Downtown Yakima ambiance. All proceeds support the Allied Arts of Yakima Valley’s community arts programs. Hotels within easy walking distance of this event in Downtown Yakima are the Hilton Garden Inn, Red Lion, Holiday Inn at Downtown Yakima Convention Center, Howard Johnsons, Holiday Inn Express, and Cedar Suites.

Make your own Fresh Hop Ale and enter contest. Annual Home Brewing Contest Enter YOUR homebrewed Fresh Hop Ale in the competition for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place homebrew Fresh Hop Ale. The brews will be judged in September and the top 3 winners will be revealed on Saturday night at the festival, where the winners will be recognized!

Hop Harvest Video:

Hop harvest starts in late August and at that time the vine at the base of each plant is cut, then the top of the vine is cut from the 18 foot high wire, falling into the truck at an approximate pace of an acre an hour. The cut vines are brought to the processing facility and lifted onto a series of conveyor belts that separate the hop cones from the leaves and vines.

The cones contain 80 percent water and would rot or mold quickly if they were not spread across a kiln, heated with natural gas burners, and allowed to dry for 10 hours in the huge drying room. After drying, the cones contain about nine percent moisture. They are dumped onto another conveyor belt sending them to a warehouse where they are poured and compressed into 200-pound burlap bags to be ground into powder. The burlap bags are shipped to a processing plant, to be made into pellets, liquid extract, or sold to a broker, who markets the hops to breweries. The process from field to truck takes 24 hours.

A Scenic Drive on The Road Less Traveled

Travel scenic country roads on this circular route, from the beautiful manicured grounds of the Yakima Area Arboretum, through the hop fields of Moxee, over Konnowac Pass southwest through the Yakima Valley. Scenic views of Yakima Valley fruit orchards beautiful in the spring when the fruit trees are blossoming, the summer when the foliage is a vibrant green and the fall, when the angle of the sun uniquely illuminates the leaves changing colors. Discover four winerys, two of which are in historic buildings.
Starting at the Yakima Valley Visitor Information Center, turn left out of parking lot and access the I-82 East freeway. Continue to Exit 34 (Nob Hill Blvd). Turn left and then another left at the light. (If you are bicycling the Konnowac Pass, you may leave you vehicle at the Greenway parking lot which at Sherman Park- this ride is about 27 miles. The pass is a moderate climb of more than two miles and a couple of short (1/4 mile) steep climbs to the top, down the other side, with the rest of the route being nearly level. Pavement quality is good and traffic generally light. Pleasant ride for Motorcyclists). The Arboretum Road to the interpretive center of the Yakima Area Arboretum and Botanical Garden is on the left. This 40-acre “tree museum” features self-guided tours, (map available), a Japanese Garden, gift shop, Jewett Pond Fountain and endless photo opportunities.

As you leave the Arboretum turn right at the light heading east on Highway 24 toward Moxee City. (Bicyclists-There is a well marked wide shoulder; traffic speed is 55mph, turn off is approximately 3.5 miles).

Moxee is from the Native American word for “whirlwinds”. In the early 1880’s the Thorp Family settled the Moxee Valley, later Alexander Graham Bell and his wife’s family invested in a large farming operation. The Moxee Land Company sold 20-acre lots in the 1890’s to recruit settlers. Hops first grown here in 1877, grew so well in this climate and soil that Moxee City, platted in 1910, became the Hop Capitol of the world. The Moxee Land Company sold 20-acre lots in the 1890’s to recruit settlers. At hop picking time, hundreds used to camp and harvest the hops by hand culminating in a “hop festival”. Moxee still celebrates this distinction as a hop growing region with the Moxee Hop Festival annually, the first weekend in August. Currently the Yakima Valley supplies over 75% of the Hops used in United States breweries and overseas markets.

Turn right on LaFramboise Road, left on Robillard Road and right on Konnowac Road. Hop fields, recognizable by the tall poles used to support the vines, reach the tops of the poles in summer.

At the Konnowac Pass Y, turn right. Konnowac Pass, through the Rattlesnake Ridge, was an old Native American trail connecting both ends of the Yakima Valley. Reaching the top of the small pass you will see the agriculture of the Yakima Valley stretched out below in a patchwork of white and pink as the cherry and apple trees blossom in spring.

Parker Heights Road, further down the pass, is on the right, just after a bend in the road. As you ride along this road surrounded by orchards, you will see Mt Adams and the distinctive old wooden Hop Kiln in the distance.

Continue on Parker Heights until the bridge over the irrigation canal. For a closer look at the old hop kiln and to visit the winery with the hop kiln pictured on its label, turn left over the bridge to the Yakima Valley Highway, after a short ride turn right to the Piety Flats Winery and Tasting Room.

Returning back to the Yakima Valley Highway, turn left, going back over the small irrigation canal bridge and continue on this road which parallels the Yakima Valley highway along the irrigation canal. Take the road going up the hill to Windy Point Winery. This boutique winery’s tasting room reflects the Frank Lloyd Wright style, designed and built to showcase Windy Point’s breathtaking views of the Yakima Valley.
When leaving, turn right at the end of the driveway and continue along the road under the freeway where you will see a small park at the Sunnyside Diversion Dam. a roadside marker tells the history of the site in a small park with picnic tables, overlooking the site of an ancient Native American fishery called – Ahwahtun, “deep water”.

Continuing under the freeway proceed up the hill to Thorp Road to Birchfield Road. To return to downtown Yakima turn right onto Highway 24, (Bicyclists-If you have left your car at the Greenway. Greenway is on the right side of the road at the light after the bridge over the Yakima River.) Take I-82 West to Exit 33 (Yakima Avenue). This will bring you directly to Downtown Yakima to experience wine tasting, art galleries, dining choices and entertainment.

Spring Bicycle Touring in Washington Wine Country!

Cycling over rolling hills on scenic country roads, past fruit orchards, irrigation canals and vineyards; Spring riding in the Yakima Valley is beautiful! The fruit trees are in bloom, the sun is shining, the weather is warm and the over 70 wineries are premiering their new spring barrel releases. Discover the joy of a healthy endeavor while learning about and tasting the wines of the Yakima Valley. Choose a short (1), medium (a) or long (b) bike ride.

(1)Short Ride approximately 4 miles Two Mountain Winery is your starting point, allowing riders to park and unload bicycles at the winery. Want to get an early start? No problem! You do not have to wait for the winery to open, just park and go.
Two Mountain Winery: Established in 2002, this is a family-owned winery nestled in the Rattlesnake Hills within the Yakima Valley wine region of Washington State. Brothers Matthew and Patrick Rawn own and operate the winery and estate vineyard, drawing on the experience of three generations who have farmed the rich soil of the Yakima Valley.

As you leave Two Mountain Winery turn to the right on Cheyne Road then left onto Gilbert Road. Hyatt Winery will be on your left.

At intersection of Bonair Road and Highland go straight to visit Bonair Winery or turn left to continue on.

Leaving Bonair, turn right onto Highland. The short ride (1) proceeds along Highland to turn left at Cheyne, and return to Two Mountain winery.

Turn left on Vintage road and follow the upward slope to Silver Lake Winery.

Silver Lake Winery released its first vintage in the fall of 1989. In the past fifteen years the winery has grown from 2,000 cases to more than 50,000 cases of hand crafted wine annually. The winery began as the outgrowth of the passion for fine wines shared by three professors at the University of Washington and a local real estate investor. Today, Silver Lake is owned by over 1,200 wine enthusiasts who have pooled their resources together to make Silver Lake one of the state’s largest locally owned wineries. Roza Hills Vineyard, Silver Lake’s primary source of grapes, are located In Zillah, Washington, in the heart of the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

Return back the same way to turn right on Highland. Turn right onto Roza Hill Drive passing Agate Field Winery turning left onto Gilbert Road and then left onto Cheyne and back to Two Mountain Winery.

Leaving Horizons Edge, turn left onto Beam and continue to work left on Houghton Road to Highland Drive.

The winemakers and staff are on hand to mingle with visitors, conduct tours and answer questions. Most open a barrel or two of future vintages for sampling. Many wineries have live music, appetizers and just a festive mood of celebration.

As the event grows and more wineries come on line, a little pre-planning helps to best enjoy the festivities. Here are a few tips to help make the celebration fun for all.

It’s social so be social: Gather friends and get a limo or join an organized tour. It’s best to plan at least one night stay. For a listing of local hotels in the Yakima Valley click here.

Take responsibility: If you do not hire a professional driver, designate a non-drinking driver. And treat the designated driver like a king or queen by buying their lunch and a bottle or two to enjoy at a later time. Note: Even if you have a designated driver, the tasting room staff is not allowed to serve you if you are impaired… it’s the law.

Get the scoop: Wineries and wine organizations have different offerings and fees (or no fees) during the weekend. Before you arrive, visit the wine association websites for the details on their offerings and programs for the weekend. Visit Wine Yakima Valley and the Rattlesnake Hills Wine Trail websites for the details (see below for their contact information and websites).

Get oriented: When you arrive, stop at the Yakima Valley Visitor Information Center for maps, updates and local trip planning information (address and info listed below).

Timing is everything: Friday and Sunday tend to be quieter so visit on those days.
Do it differently: Go to wineries early and in the opposite direction as everyone else is traveling. Many folks start at one end of the Yakima Valley and head to the other so consider starting with wineries in the middle of the map.

Be realistic: It’s not a marathon race. Visit no more than 5-6 wineries per day. Your taste pallet will grow numb.

Be prepared: Bring a cooler filled with bottled water and snacks. Pack a picnic, as many of the Yakima Valley wineries have picnic grounds or plan on eating lunch at one of the wineries that will be serving food. A good meal helps you to regain your palate and provides a needed break. Plus, bring a wine glass per person or be prepared to purchase one at a winery. Wine glasses are required at most wineries during event weekends. Also, if it is warm, consider a cooler for your purchased wines. Heat is bad for wine.

Try something new: Tasting from the barrel is very different then trying a finished product out of a bottle. Talk to the winemaker and staff. Ask about the flavor, process and how the wine will taste when finished. It’s a great time to gain a greater appreciation of the winemaking process.

Be Patient: The weekend draws a lot of people and staff at the wineries are working as fast as they can.

Be Respectful…of other tasters and the staff. Try not to get too pushy or grouchy. Everyone is having fun and there are just a lot of people.

Be aware: When it is busy in the tasting room, it’s important that you step up to the bar and receive your taste, then step back and take your time smelling and tasting the wine. This allows others up to the bar to get a taste. In other words, don't monopolize the bar space in front of others who are trying to participate.

Don’t wear it: 70 to 80% of our ability to perceive flavor comes from our sense of smell. So please do not wear perfume, cologne, aftershave or any other fragrance, as it interferes with everyone's ability to smell, and hence taste the wines. You should also refrain from chewing gum and breath mints.

Spitting and dumping is good: Just because wine is in your glass doesn’t mean you should drink it all. Believe it or not, you will enjoy it more if you don’t drink every drop. Your mouth won’t fatigue, you won’t become as intoxicated, and you will have more fun. Dumping excess wine into the provided bucket is okay. If you like the wine, buy a bottle or two.

Leave it outside: All alcohol from outside the winery being visited is not permitted. This means beer, bloody Mary’s, screwdrivers, mimosas, cosmos, etc. The wineries can actually lose their license if there is outside alcohol brought into their facilities.

Have pets? Kids? Children are always welcome at the wineries, but the crowds and focus of the event may not be suited to them. And while a few wineries are dog friendly, it’s best to leave the pups at home.

Buy-buy! No that is not a typo, it’s an encouragement to buy wine during the event. The wineries spend a lot of time and their resources to stage a great weekend. Show your gratitude by buying wine for another day. They’ll appreciate the business, and you’ll take home some premium wines, many of which are only available at the winery itself.

Tanjuli - New Winery Built in Yakima Valley

Tom Campbell, the Tanjuli winemaker/owner with over 30 years of wine making experience, has built his new winery in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA of the Yakima Valley. Trained at the U.C. Davis School of viticulture, he worked in the California wine industry in the Sonoma Valley, Edna Valley and Temucula after graduating setting up wineries and planting vineyards. He worked as the enologist at Chateau Ste. Michelle's Grandview Winery for many years and built and operated Horizons Edge Winery from 1983-1985.
Currently he is the founder and winemaker of Mission Mountain Winery located on the shore of Flathead Lake in Dayton, Montana. In Washington State. He is the Director Of Wine Production for Woodhouse Family Cellars in Woodenville WA. Tom crafted their flagship wine, Darighe ( “red” in Gaelic), a Boudeaux style red in 1998, which lead to the creation of Woodhouse Family Cellars in 2004.

Tanjuli Winery is built into the side of a hill. The large building will house the production, wine barrels and the tasting room. There are plans for an outside picnicking space and live music performances and there is plenty of parking.

Tanjuli Wines are sold only at the winery, the Yakima Valley Visitor Information Center, and special events.

Snowmobile Recreation - Where are the Trails?

The Yakima Valley is in close proximity to prime winter recreation areas. Snowmobilers, are you ready for miles and miles of groomed trails? Joe Parsons,(videos of competition) known for his snowmobiling expertise as Winter X Games Gold Medalist spent his early days on the numerous trails in Yakima Valley.

The local popular trails are Ahtanum Meadows and the Ahtanum Guard Station. Take the I-82 Exit 36 Valley Mall Blvd. West to 3^rd turn left, at Ahtanum turn right and travel 25 miles to Tampico Food Store (closed) at the Y-intersection, turn right. Ahtanum Meadows, about 8 miles from the Y, features 54 miles of trails and 15 camping spaces. At 9.5 miles the Ahtanum guard station has 100 spaces and 54 miles of trails. This recreation area was due to be closed in 2009 due to state budget cuts to these Department of Natural Resources Land. A local snowmobile club, the Ski Benders raised the money to keep the area groomed and plowed for the 2009-2010 season. This area is so close to Yakima one can take advantage of the hotels and restaurants in the cities of Union Gap and Yakima.

Traveling the White Pass Scenic Byway , turn left on to Tieton road, which is south of Rimrock Lake. There are numerous trail choices for snowmobiling located about 40 miles from Yakima turn left onto Hwy 12, continue to Tieton Road and turn left. If you are coming over the White Pass Scenic Byway from the west, take the Clear Lake exit off Hwy 12 to reach these trails.

These areas on Tieton Road are:

Tieton Airstrip-35 spaces and 66 miles of trails.
Fish Creek-5 spaces, 66 miles of trails.
Cold Creek-85 spaces 66 miles of trails.
Pine Grass-5 spaces, 66 miles of trails.

Bear Creek Trail off Tieton Road -Take US Forest Service Road 1204, features 17 spaces and 66 miles of trails.

For Bethel Ridge/Soup Creek trails take US Forest Service Road 1305 off of Hwy 12.

Yakima River Canyon Marathon & Bike Ride

Run A 26.2 mile marathon , take a bike ride with the family and enjoy the views along the way.
The Yakima River Canyon, framed by sheer basalt rock cliffs, rising 2,000 feet above the river. You will find the densest concentration of nesting hawks, eagles and falcons in the state, and the endangered basalt daisy, growing only in the Yakima River Canyon. The canyon is known for excellent Blue Ribbon fly fishing. In the summertime many float down the river on inner tubes, kayak or rafting for a relaxing and refreshing time. The Bureau of Land Management maintains campsites along the canyon and charges a minimal overnight fee for camping. The Umptanum Recreation area features a hike across the suspension foot bridge over the Yakima River into the scenic canyon area.

The Spirit of A.E. Larson(1862-1934) is Alive & Well in the Yakima Valley

A.E. Larson wanted a building that *"will stand as a sentinel of the Yakima Valley, beautiful in the perfect harmony of architecture and decoration." The plan was to build a modern eleven story office building by consulting with the best architects from around the country and using the best materials available

In 1931, during the great depression, A.E. Larson built the Yakima landmark, The Larson Building. The 188 feet high building, built in the Art-Deco style, houses 225 offices and is one of the tallest buildings in Yakima.

The spacious main lobby features walls of black and red Italian Marble, cast ornamented plastered ceiling. Floor inlay designs of marble and brass-dividing strips embedded into the terrazzo, marble walls and special cast bronze elevator fronts.

Larson wrote upon completion of the building:* "The decision to erect this building was based upon a deep-seated faith in the further development and continued future prosperity of Yakima and of the Yakima Valley."

"Perhaps present conditions do not warrant, from a return or earning standpoint, in investment of three-quarters of a million dollars in this building, but that phase of the project has been over-shadowed by an earnest desire to do something in a substantial and a serviceable way for Yakima and it’s people."

In 2011, this same spirit and deep-seated faith exists in the City of Yakima, Committee for Downtown Yakima, New Vision:Yakima County Development Association, Yakima Visitor and Convention Bureau and the people of Yakima. The only difference being, instead of one man’s desire for Yakima now an entire community believes in the future prosperity of Yakima and the Yakima Valley. What could explain the extraordinary cooperation between different businessmen, service groups, tourism professionals, Yakima residents, crafting the Downtown Futures Initiative and the driving force to convince Washington State representatives that Yakima needs to be ready for its future?

*Since 2006, the Washington State has devoted more than $8 million dollars to help with the renovation and revitalization of Downtown Yakima. The funding has helped repair and widen sidewalks to encourage outside dining, added street lights and improve walking areas and curb appeal with trees, decorative lighting, planters and hanging baskets.

In response, by 2010, business and property owners have invested nearly $50 million for additional renovations to downtown Yakima. New businesses, such as the Hilton Garden Inn, Ummelina's world class spa, Stems Gift Shop, 2^nd Street Grill, SportsCenter, The Seasons Performance Hall, Garden Dance,The Little Soapmaker, Kana Winery, Gilbert Cellars, The Lofts condo style living, Tony's Steak House, new Holiday Inn have moved into downtown. Art installations now exist on 2^nd Street, Front Street Historic District and at the new 2nd Street performance park. Buildings are being renovated for new businesses to come, occupy and add to the community by those who have caught site of this vision. Like A.E. Larson, who built when times were very tough, these business professionals, and community members have “an earnest desire to do something in a substantial and a serviceable way for Yakima and it’s people."

In 1931 A. E. Larson’s building met his goals and dreams and instantly became a landmark in the city of Yakima.

In 2010 the downtown revitalization has met the goals and dreams of many and Yakima is the beautiful gathering place envisioned.

The Perfect Day - Yakima River Canyon Para-gliding

The Yakima River Canyon is known primarily for Blue Ribbon Fly Fishing and lazy summer days floating the river, but did you know that experienced para-gliders have discovered the canyon ridges. There are two distinct ridges where para-gliders can be seen, at the northern end of the Yakima River Canyon, Baldy Butte and the southern, Selah Butte.
In the Yakima Valley, experienced para-gliders fly off Selah Butte, where the city of Selah, WA can be seen in the distance in this video, "Perfect Day."

Located at the northern end of the Yakima River Canyon, Baldy Butte is a popular for Paragliding. The launching area is the highest point along the Umtanum Ridge and privately owned. Members of NWPC have access through a site use agreement. The Northwest Paragliding Club sponsors a Fly-in at Baldy Butte in September.

Nature Tourism in the Yakima Valley

Nature tourism is defined as the enjoyment of travel through the natural world, its seasonal cycle and events, carried out in a manner that promotes the protection of natural and human communities.

Whether you choose the high desert route (I-82 E) over the sage and grass hilltops to overlook the valley stretching out below, or the route along the Yakima River at the bottom of the canyon, the natural scenery is spectacular. The Yakima River Canyon drive offers opportunities to spot eagles fishing in the winter as well as big horn sheep and mule deer on the cliffs and talus slopes. There are numerous places to pull off the road to view the wildlife and take pictures.

The Oak Creek Wildlife Feeding Station is located off The White Pass Scenic Byway (Hwy 12) Elk migrate from the mountains when the snow pack gets deep, to the foothills where the station is located. The Rocky Mountain Elk bulls average weight is 450-900 lbs and their antler racks are impressive. During severe winters, as many as 8,000 elk may use feeding areas. The migration affords the opportunity to see these majestic animals up close as they are being fed. You may watch the feeding, which is generally around 1:30 every day and usually the elk stay nearby after the feeding.

The Winter Wildlife Tour is a nature themed getaway on January 22, 2011. You will have a chance to view Bighorn sheep at the Cleman Mountain winter feeding station, where up to 150 sheep congregate during feeding times and the elk that gather at Oak Creek Wildlife Area. Not many have the chance to get this close to the animals for the unique viewing and photographic opportunity. The cost is $45/person and includes breakfast, lunch and transportation. The Yakima Area Wildlife Viewing Guide is a valuable resource outlining all the Nature tourism areas in the Yakima Valley. This brochure includes a map to all the natural areas and descriptions of the wildlife that one will see. The printed brochure is available at the Yakima Valley Visitor Information Center.

The Wenas Creek Wildlife Area was designated as a bird sanctuary in 1966 in honor of Hazel Wolf, a renown naturalist and Audubon mentor. Every Memorial Weekend, Washington State's Audubon Chapters and their friends gather in the Wenas Valley. There are campfire programs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. Field Trips, which include both birding trips and wildflower trips. are scheduled Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. This is a free event. The gathering is held in the vicinity of the Larrison Tree along Wenas Creek within the Wenas Creek Campground. The camping is primitive, if you would like to attending the programs and not camp there are many accommodation choices available in Yakima Area . The closest being the North Park Lodge in Selah.

The Audobon Society produces an excellent series of birding trail maps for all areas in Washington State. The Sun and Sage Loop map features the birds seen in the Yakima Valley Area.

Luminaria Walk at the Arboretum

The 18th Annual Luminaria Walk is a free family event featuring a mile-long candlelit walk through the Arboretum's winter landscape. Follow the pathway lit by luminaria to the 80-foot lighted Norwegian Spruce Christmas Tree, the rose garden gazebo and fountain and more, as you listen to Christmas tunes floating over the landscape. It is a magical experience when the snow is falling.

After your walk, warm up with hot cider, freshly pressed from Johnson Orchards, Christmas carols, local musicians playing favorites and children can make their own Luminaria bags to take home. All this in the Jewett Interpretive Center, December 10th and 11th, 6-9pm.
